When to go to the hospital…
Monday, March 17th, 2008Many of my clients want to go to the hospital as late as possible to avoid unnecessary interventions. The logic is sound that if you are not in the hospital, they cannot do anything to you. And once you are there, they don’t make any money by doing nothing to you, so they don’t really want you there taking up space. I advise my clients that if this is the desired course of action, to stay home as long as possible, that the laboring mother should go when things get serious between contractions. And, when the thought of the car ride seems unbearable. That’s the right time to go. That’s when you are progressed pretty well in the cervical dilation. Laboring at home can be more comfortable for some, or it can cause more anxiety because mom just wants to get the travel over with. She makes the call. Know that upon arrival at the hospital there’s a whole new set of axieties and you might have liked to be at your peaceful home longer. Nothing beats the peacefulness of just staying home and giving birth there with a midwife and doula attending.
